Life In Miniature
I am finally back after a month and it has been one hell of a month. The fence was one hell of an undertaking and it is finally almost finished. It seems like it has been one busy week after another but I am back. For anyone who also follows the podcast we will be back at it with a new episode this week. I have a tendency to get myself in over my head, but I have been slowly digging myself out of the hole and I think I am finally almost back on track. There is another big project in the works that I hope to have ready by next week. I will post more details when the time comes so stay tuned for that!
On a slightly related note, I have discovered a new hobby! Gary has been wanting to get us into Battletech for a while now and we finally decided to give it a shot. The first thing we had to do was paint the little robots that came with the game. That is how I discovered that I really like painting miniatures. There is something really relaxing about being able to just sit and focus intently on something. I am not particularly good at it right now, but it is still really fun to do. So far I have only painted the Battletech mechs but today I am going to try some D&D minis so hopefully those turn out good!
The Mechs I have painted so far in chronological order.
As part of this dive into painting plastic miniatures, Gary recommended going to a Warhammer store in our area. I didn’t know what to expect going into it because it had been such a long time since I had been into any kind of hobby store but it ended up being a fantastic experience. Kevin, the store manager, was very helpful in picking out paint colors and explaining how the different types of paints are used. I plan on going back to do some workshopping with the Warhammer minis and picking up some of the minis that catch my eye to paint once I get better. It is always awesome to have a resource you can turn to when you are first getting into a hobby to help guide you and bounce ideas off of. This is not sponsored by the store at all(I wish I had sponsors lol) I just really enjoyed the store and Kevin was a huge help. I recommend anyone in the area to go there if you are interested in playing Warhammer with other people or even if you just want to get more into painting miniatures like me.
I have been doing a lot of reflecting about my past self lately and I am happy with the person I have become. I think a large part of that is the blog helping me work through things and encouraging me to try new things. Past me would never have considered writing a blog. I was always into science and math and I just assumed that because I wasn’t as good at art and English I wouldn’t enjoy them. I never considered myself to be the “creative” type and honestly I still don’t, but that doesn’t mean you can’t try creative pursuits. Not being an inherently creative person almost makes these hobbies better because it doesn’t come as easily to me so I have to try harder to make these things something actually quality. By no means am I saying the blog is quality but I do try to make it the best I can.
I think that has been the biggest part of just making myself try things. I have always had a perfectionist mentality, so trying something and being bad at it was always super discouraging. It got to the point that I only stuck to the things that I knew I was good at. Making myself try these new things has made me open up more to the idea that it is okay to be bad at things. There is still a part of me that wants to be the best at everything I do, but I am getting better and not letting that stop me from just trying things anyway.
I want to get to painting now, so I think I am going to wrap things up for this week’s post. The podcast should be going up at 5 a.m. Thursday as usual again. As I said before, there is also going to be another big project revealing sometime this week as long as I get myself together so stay tuned for that. Have a great week everyone and go out and try something you haven’t done because you have been scared of failure. You might just surprise yourself.
